Bonsoir Love, an audio visual creation by Romain Yurkievich.
Future dictator, surrealist, artist, musician and mermaid, Romain Yurkievich, speaks to Voight Kampff Magazine. I had the good fortune to discover this exquisite creature on the top deck of the N98 night bus at 5am on a Sunday morning in London.
Where are you from and what attracted you to London? I am from Paris. I don’t live in London. I went there for a few days to find inspiration, meet people and experiment with being a mermaid in London.
Tell me about the first film you remember seeing that had a major impact on you. ”Funny Games” by Michael Haneke. I loved going to the movies with my dad when I was a kid. I was shocked and fascinated. I don’t know if it really had an impact on my work but it probably helped my brain to create the animal that I am right now.
How long have you been making short films and was there a certain moment when you realised that this is what you wanted to do in life? I’ve been doing photography for a long time, designing the sets. I also create surrealistic Music/Sounds, so I created music videos. It’s not really a choice. I heard a voice in my dreams saying, “you have to make a video”. I am just so limitless in my work. I do experiment a lot. I don’t consider myself as someone who makes short films anyway. I’m just an artist.
What are the main influences on your film style? The main influence is surrealism, not especially in my videos but in everything that I create. I went to Dali’s museum theatre in Figueras when I was twelve. It really changed my life.
Tell me about the music soundtrack to Bonsoir Love. What influences your sound? I was having the warmest bath ever, then I heard in my head, “Bonsoir Love”, it was a vision. Then I saw all the visuals that you can see on my video. When I imagine something, it is BIG.
Your favourite everyday household or industrial sound? The sound that my baby fish, “Felicita” makes when I feed her.
Are you a real mermaid? Half mermaid, my parents are mermaids and they are lost in the ocean. I decided to be a Horse at the same time. Sometimes I am also a little bird, or a human being. I love to transform, it keeps me grounded.
Are you working on any films at the moment that you would like people to know about and could you also tell me about any future projects? I am working on a video. It is a representation of my divine birth. It’s about the religion that I am creating. I also worked on 4 music videos for a very talented musician, Cocovan.
Do you have a dream project? I want to be the king of the universe. I will be a great dictator. People will be naked, singing “Bonsoir Love”, and the ocean will be replaced by the liquid I created for my video.
Tell me a secret. I am 855890 years old, I am from Jupiter and I am here to become friends with dolphins. But don’t tell anyone - it is a secret.
